Unsung Heroes Of T20 World Cup 2009

The World Cup T20, 2009 has proven to be the greatest event for Pakistan cricket after World Cup 1992. The celebrations and enthusiasm was extravagant. Players have been praised and awarded huge amount of money reaching around 53 million mark. Younus Khan is the most benefited player who has grabbed 75, 00,000 Rupees till now and deserving so.

I was wondering since the Final match that what about the Coach Intikhab Alam and assistant coach Aqib Javed’s efforts? They remain the unsung heroes of the event. Intikhab Alam has got a hold of 78, 125 Rupees as award till now according to a news report, while no figures are available for Aqib Javed. Interestingly they both were in the squad of world Cup 1992 wining team. Aqib Javed was the leading bowler of Semi Final and final matches while Intikhab Alam was the coach of Pakistan team at that time.

I remember a skit from a comedy show of PTV after the famous Sixer of Miandad in Sharjah against England. Salma Agha sang a song Eik Bar Milo Hum Sey & it was aired on PTV in mid 80s. Bushra Ansari parodied it as Eik Chakkey Kay Javed Ko & it became a classic hit.

“Ek Chakay k Javed ko……..

Soo Lakh milen gay……….

Tauseef becharay ko dirham Aath milen gay.”

The satirical points was that after that great sixer and win all the praise was grabbed by Javed Miandad while Tauseef Ahmed, who was batting on the other end was completely forgotten. Same is the case with Aqib and Intikhab Alam. The efforts of these unsung heroes are priceless and should be praised at all levels.

Pakistan wins T20 World Cup 2009, Hail Greens

It was after 1992 when I saw the same zeal and passion for cricket throughout Pakistani nation. Pakistan was the under dog at that time but God almighty has blessed our nation with such a prestigious trophy. In Twenty twenty world cup scenario was almost the same. We were not considered favorite enough to win the title while the attack on Sri Lankan team in Lahore has created a global rejection of foreign teams to play with Pakistan. ICC ripped of the share of World Cup 2011 matches from Pakistan due to security concerns. ICC champion’s trophy has been postponed and the venue shifted to South Africa. World Cup 2011 head quarter also been moved from Lahore to Mumbai. There were huge disappointments regarding sports and crickets future in Pakistan.

“All well that ends well”

Pakistan team over and done with the T20 Wolrd cup with an expected win in the finals against Sri lanka. The whole nation joined there hands to pray and give moral support to each other and their team. I had seen Green flags flaunting as display image of Pakistanis throughout the day on social networks like Twitter and Facebook. There was a flood of greens all over. Every one is identified as a Pakistani only. The celebrations are not less than Eid. Cell phones flooded with congratulations messages & networks stuck. There were Fireworks, Bhangra, sharing of sweets, Roaring of we won as passionate youngsters celebrates all over the streets. I had seen cars and bikes with flaunting flags yesterday after the match when we also went to participate in national saga of glee.
Celebration after win

This was the right time to record a win under the belt by Pakistan. The event has proved to be much bigger than IPL and very well organized. The matches were superbly unexpected and neck to neck. Umer Gul, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal were the real stars of the tournament. Muhammed Aamir will be a gem for Pakistan pace attack. The statue of liberty kind of pose and a flying kiss to Jacques Kallis has done wonders for Afridi. He regained his charm through his performance in every field. He was good with the bat and better with the ball.

The first major title Pakistan has won in 17 years, and it comes at a time when the country faces a crowd of escalating problems

Heartiest congratulations to all Pakistanis everywhere in the world. It is the time to celebrate a much needed moral boosting win. Hail Greens.

As a Pakistani I will be more than happy to see Pakistan team wining the event with flying colors. I don’t want to be in Younus Khan’s shoes today as enormous pressure he has to bear but he knows the value of this win. After World Cup 1992 this will be the next big moment for Pakistan cricket. Huge celebrations expected afterward and people really don’t want to shatter this dream now by just thinking about any other possible match result.

Semi Final T20 2009; Unbeatens were beaten by Pakistan

Shahid Afridi lifted Pakistan to a defendable total

Pakistan’s victory against South Africa in the semi-final of the Twenty20 World Cup was certainly a team effort. But let’s be honest – one man stood out, and it was none other than Shahid Khan Afridi. The big fella had been excellent with the ball throughout the tournament and had shown several moments of brilliance on the field. But his power hitting with the bat had been missing for a long time.

Pakistan has won the toss and elected to bat first on what is expected to be slow and low wicket during the first world T20 semi-final.

Pakistan played with an unchanged side from the one which beat the Kiwis and Ireland to secure a place in the semis, while South Africa have made one change from the team which beat India, with the dangerous Kallis coming in for fast-bowler Morne Morkel.

Pakistan got off to a blazing start through keeper Kamran Akmal’s 12 ball 23. However the South Africans clawed their way back into the game to dismiss both openers and keep Pakistan to 47/2.

Afridi strode out to bat at number three, smashing a 34 ball 51 before holing out to J P Duminy. A match-changing innings from Afridi was long overdue, and when Younus Khan sent Afridi to bat one-down, breaths were held and quiet prayers muttered, hoping that the big man would deliver.

Younis Khan and Shoaib Malik kept up the pressure till Malik skied one to Botha in the deep. It looked at that stage as if Pakistan would end up with a score in the region of 160 to 170. However, some excellent death bowling from South Africa’s fast men kept the dangerous Pakistani middle order quiet.

After 20 overs, Pakistan finished with 149/4. Shahid Afridi shone with bat and ball. The maverick batsman smashed 51 from 34 balls and then grabbed 2-16 with his leg-spin as Pakistan successfully defended 149-4 to restrict the favored Proteas to 142-5 before a sell-out crowd at Trent Bridge to storm into the World Twenty20 final.

Pakistan, runners-up to India in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa two years ago, await the winners of Friday’s semi-final between Sri Lanka and the West Indies in Sunday’s final at Lord’s.

Afridi plundered eight boundaries, including four in succession off Johan Botha, after Pakistan elected to bat on a wicket that slowed down as the evening progressed.

Veteran Jacques Kallis made a brave attempt to take the South Africans home, striking seven fours and a six in 64 from 54 balls, but the other batsmen faltered against the spot-on attack.

Match Summary:

Pakistan 149 for 4 (Afridi 51, Malik 34) beat South Africa 142 for 5 (Kallis 64, Duminy 44*, Afridi 2-16) by seven runs
